Bilingualism-more generally- multilingualism – is a major fact of life in the world today. Research on bilingualism, whether theory-driven or practically oriented, has grown dramatically in quality, quantity and breadth in recent years. The term bilingual refers to individuals who can function in more than one language. The category of bilinguals is very broad–encompassing individuals who are sophisticated speakers, readers, and writers of two or more languages, as well as those who use a limited knowledge of a second language (L2) for purposes such as work or schooling, and who may be literate in only one language (or even completely illiterate). Bilingualism is a feature not just of individuals, but also of societies. Societies in which two languages are used regularly, or in which more than one language has official status or a recurrent function, can be called bilingual. In a world in which people are increasingly mobile and ethnically self-aware, questions concerning bilingualism/multilingualism take on increasing importance from both scholarly and practical points of view. There has been much debate and controversy over the use of bilingualism as a teaching aid and a resource in teaching EFL. The researchers are expected to investigate into the scope of the contribution of use of bilingualism in foreign language learning/teaching class. Bilingualism in the classroom is not considered as the medium of teaching as happens in grammar-translation method, but as a teaching technique or as a teaching aid.
